Michael Conrad Memorial Swim Meet

Sunday, 05 December 2010

The West Toronto Barracudas Club and Special Olympics Toronto would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Ray Bennett and Peter Simpson for their wonderful idea to start a Fund that helped create the Michael Conrad Memorial Swim Meet. A sincere thank you goes to all of Michael's friends and family who generously donated to the Fund and who volunteered to help out at the Meet.  Through the Michael Conrad Memorial Swim Meet, we are grateful for this opportunity to honour our former coach with those who knew Michael as well as with the Special Olympics family.

As a competitive swimmer, Michael possessed extensive knowledge about swimming and competition from his days in high school and university.  While he was coaching, he shared this expertise in his sensitive and charming way to help advance the skills of his swimmers.  Most memorable were the freestyle races between Michael and coach Andy - they showed everyone what fast swimming and flip turns were all about!

The West Toronto Barracudas valued the time Michael Conrad spent with them and will always be thankful that he was part of the team.  A quote from Helen Keller expresses our sentiments well:

What we once enjoyed we can never lose.

All that we love deeply becomes a part of us

Michael Conrad Swim Meet - Dec. 4

Friday, 26 November 2010

The Michael Conrad Memorial Swim Meet takes place on Saturday, December 4 at the Rosedale Heights School of the Arts.  This is a unique opportunity to not only act as a memorial meet for Michael Conrad but is an excellent opportunity for all Toronto clubs to meet and compete.  The Michael Conrad Swim Meet organizers have been working hard to raise money to go towards swim meets, in honor of Michael and his efforts with Special Olympics. They have done an excellent job and we are very grateful to be able to fund this event through their efforts. Our hope is to make this an annual event. The phenomenal effort of the many donors will allow this event to continue for years to come.

The Meet takes place at 1:00 pm and the school is located at 771 Bloor Street East in downtown Toronto.  There will be more than 12 separate race categories and dinner will be provided for the athletes and volunteers.  Be sure to come out if you can!

Soccer Tournament Wrap-Up

Monday, 16 August 2010

Dear Volunteers and Teams,

This Saturday August 14 2010 you all came out for a soccer tournament and showed your support. Volunteers and athletes from the clubs and community together did a great job this Saturday August 14 2010.

Just a short note of thanks for an exceptional job organizing the day…..

Pulling up all the nets for goal posts and solving puzzle pieces for all the tents and helping out with lunch and cheering on all of our athletes.  The success of the soccer tournament was a work, effort and collaboration between all volunteers, coaches and athletes.

We do hope you enjoyed this experience. Your contribution is valuable to Special Olympics as we all work collectively to build and grow the Special Olympics movement.  It goes without saying, but can never be said enough – Thank you for your wonderful, tireless and dedicated work!  We know you do it because you are passionate and derive joy out of working with our/for athletes, but our tournaments would not exist without a diligent and devoted group such as yourselves.

Thanks for a terrific job - you helped make it a great day for athletes,

Thanks for you personal effort, professionalism and good cheer! You are simply the “best”! Volunteers and clubs showed their support and what we had was an overwhelming response with passion and kindness for Special Olympics.

Results from the tournament:

Division 1: 1st - Toronto Hawks B; 2nd - Grand Ravine Kickers B; 3rd - Toronto Hawks C

Division 2: 1st - Etobicoke Sidekicks; 2nd - Grand Ravine Kickers C; 3rd - Grand Ravine D

Thank You SO Much

Regards,

Pratima and the volunteers from Special Olympics Toronto

Monday, 12 July 2010

It was a perfect day for softball on Saturday, July 10 as teams from Toronto, Brampton, Peterborough, Welland and Hamilton travelled to Coronation Park for the annual Homecoming Games, hosted by the Knights of Columbus.  The Opening Ceremonies took place at 9:30 AM and then the teams played a full day of softball with a break for lunch.  We thank the Knights of Columbus for organizing the event and for providing a wonderful barbecue lunch for the athletes.  Congratulations to the coaches and volunteers and to the athletes for coming out and playing the tournament in true Special Olympics spirit!
